Many people with Epilepsy find that alternative or complementary therapies – in other words anything that doesnat come under the umbrella of standard medical practice – can help them rid with their epilepsy.
However the general rule of thumb is that itas fine to experiment with complementary therapies or alternative treatments as long as you inform your doctor what youare doing and donat come off any medication without taking professional advice!
Itas important to be aware that there are plenty of suspicious products and services being promoted by quack doctors who are only too happy to prey on peopleas fears and ignorance about their illness.
Ask your doctor first before trying anything you see in the internet!
The first on my list is:
Neurofeedback.
Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback that uses EEG electroencephalography to provide a signal that can be used by a person to receive feedback about the brain’s activity.
How does Neurofeedback work?
Electrodes are applied to the scalp to monitor brainwave activity. The signal is fed to and processed by the computer and information about certain key brainwave frequencies were extracted. All brainwave frequencies are equal, but some are more equal than others.
The result of the process (extraction of brainwave frequency activity) is shown back to the patient, who attempts to control the activity level of Some frequencies of his/her brain thus allowing the patient to retain desirable traits or get rid of the undesirable ones. Some practitioners present this processed information to their patient in the form of a video game. The patient is somewhat interacting with his/her brain by playing the video game.
Eventually the brainwave activity is trained toward more desirable, more regulated performance. The target frequencies, and the specific locations on the scalp where the brain is monitored, are specific to the conditions
being addressed, and specific to the individual.
